Abstract
A profound transformation in agriculture is being realized through the widespread adoption of precision farming and smart irrigation systems, leading to a fundamental enhancement in energy management. This chapter provides an insight into modern, smart irrigation technologies, including soil moisture sensors, weather-based controllers, and Internet of Things (IoT) based systems, all of which have been developed to advance water management through improved accuracy in irrigation. Recent advancements have highlighted the crucial role of ICT technologies in fostering the development of smart and sustainable agriculture. Within this context, an overview of contemporary smart irrigation software solutions, including Dacom Irrigation Advice and Irris Scheduling Software, is provided in this chapter. Additionally, the SWAMP project's view, architecture, pilots, and its scenario-based development process are presented. The microgrid is overseen by an energy management system (EMS), the foundation of which is model predictive control (MPC).
