Measuring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity in an Organisation: Scale Development for DEI Index
Abstract
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are foundational frameworks for cultivating fair, respectful, and inclusive environments across workplaces, educational institutions, and communities. Diversity celebrates the multitude of human differences, including race, ethnicity, gender, age, and socio-economic status. Equity ensures fairness by addressing systemic barriers and biases that perpetuate inequalities, while inclusion emphasizes fostering environments where diverse perspectives are valued, and individuals feel a genuine sense of belonging, respect, and empowerment. This study explores the multidimensional nature of DEI within organizational contexts, highlighting its role in advancing social justice, equality, and innovation. It examines diversity as the representation of varied identities, equity as the commitment to fairness, and inclusion as the cultivation of belonging. Furthermore, this research presents the development of a robust scale to measure DEI within organizations, addressing a critical gap in assessing how well these principles are implemented and experienced by employees. The scale evaluates key dimensions such as representation, access to opportunities, fairness in processes, and the inclusiveness of organizational culture. By integrating theoretical insights with practical measurement tools, the study provides actionable frameworks for embedding DEI in institutional structures. It concludes that embracing DEI not only drives creativity and employee engagement but also equips organizations to dismantle systemic inequities and foster thriving, innovative environments.
