Abstract

This case traces 50 years of Malaysia–China relations, showing how they evolved from diplomatic normalization into a dense, pragmatic partnership spanning trade, investment, finance, energy, development and people-to-people ties. China is now Malaysia's top trading partner and a major investor in manufacturing, infrastructure, and digital services, underpinned by RMB swap lines, sukuk, and joint ventures such as ECRL, MCKIP, Proton–Geely, and eWTP/fintech platforms. Cooperation also covers health, education, agriculture, climate, culture and tourism. Yet debt sustainability, localization and skills transfer, environmental transparency, regulatory frictions, and South China Sea tensions constrain the relationship. The next phase is likely to focus on high-tech, green and innovation-driven sectors, with long-term resilience depending on how effectively both sides manage these risks.
