Abstract
The early 20th century ushered in a time of widespread activism and social reform. Female activists and educators like Mary Church Terrell promoted a motto of “lifting as we climb” to reflect their ideals that they could support their communities and make effective social change by elevating others as they elevated themselves. The current work builds on the historic success of these women, and their legacy of strength and empowerment in response to a growing need for social support and leadership development among Black women and other women of color in academia. This chapter explores relevant history and scholarship and outlines a need for improved support systems, undergirded by a social-ecological framework. There is a goal to enhance well-being and systems of support for racially diverse women, as they navigate challenging academic and administrative roles. This research can inform institutional practices and diversity, equity, and inclusion-related initiatives, including the recruitment and retention of racially diverse women in the academy.
