Influence of Abusive Work Environment on Employee Wellbeing in the Health Sector
Abstract
Abusive work environment has emerged as a major concern in today's workplaces, negatively impacting organizations both socially and financially. It contributes to high employee turnover, absenteeism, low morale, increased healthcare costs, and poor performance, placing a financial burden on organizations. Despite these challenges, limited attention has been given to understanding the impact of such an environment on employee well-being. This study investigates the influence of abusive work environment on employee wellbeing in the public and private healthcare sectors in Karachi, Pakistan. Using qualitative methodology, data was collected from 20 nurses in hospitals across the region. Thematic analysis revealed that an abusive work environment harms nurses' wellbeing. The study emphasizes the need for organizations to implement health and wellness programs, including workshops and awareness campaigns addressing workplace toxicity and its economic and psychological effects. Fostering a positive workplace culture is essential for enhancing employee wellbeing and achieving better organizational outcomes.
