Abstract
Physiotherapy students face the critical task of developing robust clinical skills in a controlled, safe environment before transitioning to real-world practice. While traditional methods such as lectures, labs, and even simulations with virtual patients offer valuable educational experiences, they often lack the dynamic and emotional interactions inherent in real patient encounters. This chapter delves into the role of simulated patients (SPs) in bridging this gap, providing Physiotherapy students with realistic opportunities to refine their communication, clinical reasoning, and patient management skills. The chapter also presents a detailed report and reflection on the ongoing implementation of a SP program within the Physiotherapy undergraduate curriculum at Porto Polytechnic, specifically addressing the three primary areas of practice. This initiative underscores the importance of SPs in enhancing the learning process by simulating authentic patient scenarios, thus preparing students for clinical practice more effectively.
