Abstract
Brunei Darussalam has been a Malay Muslim Monarchy for six centuries and the country follows the Sunni Shafite sect of Islam as its official religion. In 2005 the government introduced the Halal Certificate and Halal Label Order, which was amended and revised in 2017 making it compulsory for all food and beverages industry serving Muslim population to apply for the halal certificate. There is limited literature on how enterprises adopt and adapt to these new laws, seven years after it was made mandatory. This research aims to bridge this gap by exploring the state of halal certification, gauging businesses understanding and experiences with the certification process. The research uses qualitative, primary data collection, through semi-interviews with owners and managers of micro and small food enterprises. This research hopes to provide valuable data that can improve the development of a more streamlined and accessible halal certification process and ensure the industry continues to meet the highest standards of halal compliance in Brunei Darussalam
