Abstract
This chapter explores the transformative potential of adopting a circular economy approach to enhance sustainability in rural tourism. Traditional tourism models, which often follow a linear “take-make-dispose” pattern, contribute significantly to environmental degradation and resource depletion, particularly in rural areas where natural resources are central to the tourism experience. It also investigates how circular economy principles—focused on minimizing waste, maximizing resource efficiency, and creating closed-loop systems—can be applied to rural tourism to address these challenges. By analyzing the economic, environmental, and social benefits of circular practices, this chapter highlights the potential for rural tourism to evolve into a more sustainable and resilient sector. It also identifies the challenges and barriers to implementation, offering strategic recommendations for policymakers, tourism operators, and local communities.
