Abstract
The proliferation of fake news challenges information integrity and societal well-being in the digital age. Despite AI advancements, detecting misinformation, including deep fakes, remains difficult. However, AI offers potential solutions. This study explores AI's role in fake news detection and the impact of public policy on fact-checking through interviews with experts—Sandeep Amar, Nikhil Pahwa, and Pratyush Ranjan. The first objective examines AI's efficacy in detecting fake news, with Sandeep Amar discussing AI models. The second objective focuses on enhancing fact-checking through AI, with Pratyush Ranjan emphasising the importance of critical thinking alongside AI tools. The third objective explores government policy's role, with Nikhil Pahwa analysing Indian regulations and their impact on AI deployment for fact-checking. The study contributes to debates on addressing fake news, offering insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners. It highlights the need for a hybrid approach integrating AI's capabilities with human judgment to ensure information integrity.
