Exploratory Study of the Fintech Regulative Sandbox: Opportunities and Challenges
Abstract
Many jurisdictions have implemented a “sandbox” mechanism that allows financial technology firms to test their products under the supervision of financial authorities. The access requirements for these sandboxes are often quite strict, leading to fewer participants. The low number of companies in sandboxes results from a restrictive admission policy. A more open policy could lead to uncoordinated consumer protection. Therefore, this paper explores the benefits and potential for fintech sandbox development in Brunei, along with the challenges fintech companies encounter in the regulatory sandbox and after graduation. The research consists of qualitative analysis based on semi-structured interviews with selected fintech officers, including those from previous sandbox participants and regulators overseeing sandbox operations.
