Empowerment via Bilingual Education: The Example of the New York State Regents Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek
Abstract
This chapter introduces the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek as one of the New York State Education Department's Approved Pathway Assessments in World Languages for the New York State Board of Regents high school diploma. As such, the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek, with its bilingual format in Modern Greek and English, is observed as an example of NYSED's bilingual education policy for its ethnically diverse population. All four component parts of the exam are analyzed against NYSED's definition of culture incorporating elements of identity, such as “language, nationality, religion” and “ways of thinking, values, and forms of expression” (2018, p.11). In this sense, the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek empowers heritage speakers of Modern Greek in their basic human rights to be represented, position themselves as subjects through the discursive practice of test-taking, and participate in American society, while conversely grafting the learners of Modern Greek as a World Language in American society with the values and ideals of Hellenism.
