Abstract
Sustainable computing is a new and rapidly advancing field that has developed as a direct result of the environmental cost associated with the modern computing systems propelled by the continually growing demand for high energy consuming technologies like cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and IoT. This paper also examines the current and emerging trends, development, and issues in sustainable computing. It discusses energy efficient hardware advancements, green data centres, renewable energy assimilation and the application of artificial intelligence in resource management. The paper also looks at other software practices that have led to the reduction of energy consumption energy-aware algorithms, green software design and virtualization. Innovations like Edge computing and energy-efficient routing protocols are explained in the context of reducing the carbon of global computing infrastructure. The survey is meant to give an overview of the current situation and future opportunities and to foster cross-disciplinary work for the improvement of sustainability in computing.
