Educational Assessments in the Age of Generative AI: Transforming Educational Assessment in Africa - Opportunities and Challenges of Generative AI
Abstract
Educational assessments are essential for evaluating student learning and academic achievement. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI), a branch of AI that generates content based on natural-language prompts, offers new possibilities in education, particularly in the areas of content design, delivery, and student support. With GAI, there is growing interest in leveraging AI-driven assessments to enhance formative and summative evaluation processes. This chapter explores the benefits of GAI in promoting personalised learning, improving student engagement, and optimising feedback. While GAI holds promise in transforming educational assessments, its implementation also raises important challenges, such as algorithmic bias, data privacy concerns, and issues of fairness, particularly within the African context where infrastructural disparities and digital divides remain significant barriers. Addressing these challenges is critical to ensuring that AI-driven tools are used responsibly and equitably in African educational systems.
