Abstract

Dissertation topic selection is the foundation necessary to help doctoral students and candidates get to the finish line. Topic selection is an exciting time for doctoral program students as they get to decide what topic they want to research. his topic is something that is important to them on a personal or professional level and leaves a long-lasting legacy by contributing to the literature. Students often think they know what topic they want to write about. They have researched topics on their own, and discussed options with trusted family, friends, and colleagues. However, unless these sources of inspiration have come from doctors themselves, the advice can be misguided. This chapter explores the importance of topic selection as a foundation required to finish this advanced degree. Topics explore motivation to finish, practicality, feasibility, importance, strengths, reading, writing, narrowing focus, and how the topic selected impacts the first chapter of the dissertation.
