Abstract
The increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in European classrooms represents a significant challenge for contemporary education. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the importance of language education for promoting intercultural, civic, and democratic competences among young learners and to introduce the project entitled Developing Competences for Democratic Culture for Young Learners through Language Education. The main focus of the project is the development of teaching materials and guidelines to help primary school language teachers introduce and apply the principles of competences for democratic culture in their classrooms. This would strengthen civil society and democratic principles among future generations.
