Data Governance and Privacy in Smart Cities
Abstract
In the evolving landscape of smart cities, the integration of advanced technologies and data-driven solutions is pivotal. This chapter explores the dynamics of data governance and privacy within smart cities, emphasizing their role in enhancing urban living and infrastructure. It begins with an overview of smart cities and their reliance on data from sensors, IoT devices, and public services. Key principles of data governance, including data quality management and lifecycle management, are examined alongside regulatory frameworks like GDPR and CCPA. Privacy concerns are scrutinized, with strategies for protection such as data anonymization and encryption explored. Real-world case studies from Singapore, Barcelona, and Amsterdam illustrate challenges and successes, while future trends and technologies like blockchain and AI are considered for advancing urban innovation.
