Data Analysis Techniques
Abstract
This chapter explores the data analysis techniques used in the Applied Cognitive Task Analysis (ACTA) process, detailing how the cognitive data is being analysed. It covers structured interviews, direct observation, and work sample analysis, providing a step-by-step guide to analysed all data gathered from each technique in ACTA. The chapter discusses the strengths and limitations of these methods and how to combine them for a comprehensive view of cognitive processes. It highlights the importance of aligning data analysis strategies with research objectives, offering practical examples such as using structured interviews for verbal explanations and direct observation for real-time task performance. Work sample analysis is emphasized for its ability to provide concrete evidence of task execution and cognitive demands. This chapter equips researchers and practitioners with the tools needed to conduct effective cognitive task analysis, providing rich, actionable data for task design, training, and system optimization.
