Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Adoption
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence has become part of our society, offering new opportunities for organizations to increase their business value proposition. This paper investigates the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) that can be used as a guideline to identify essential items for successfully adopting AI. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify the predominant CSFs published in academic articles between 2020 and 2024. A total of 49 themes and 76 sub-themes, the actual CSFs, were identified using thematic analysis in Atlas.ti. The CSFs were ranked according to the number of occurrences in the final article pool of 37 articles, with the main themes of data, support, and strategy with the most occurrences. The results were consolidated and presented in a CSF framework and practical checklist. The paper makes a significant contribution as organizations can use the CSF framework as well as a checklist to identify essential items that are key to the successful adoption of AI, thereby improving their chances of reaping business value from their investments into AI.
