Context, Communication, and Constituency Management
Abstract
Barry University President Dr. Mike Allen delves into the critical importance of providing context and educating key constituent groups about the current landscape of higher education and the trends impacting desired outcomes at institutions. The chapter emphasizes the necessity for higher education presidents to communicate the “why” behind decisions and outcomes, acknowledging that external factors have a disproportionate, and often minimized, impact on measures of success. Additionally, strategies are provided for building a strong and effective Board of Trustees, highlighting the qualities needed in board members and the importance of diverse expertise and representation, as well as exploring engagement techniques and how to identify and tailor opportunities to leverage each board member's talents in a manner that best suits the organization.
