Comparative Studies of Politeness Strategies in European and Asian Cultures
Abstract
This chapter covers the notion of politeness and its many tactics, contrasting the behaviors seen in European and Asian cultures. The necessity of politeness in communication is crucial since it not only enables social connection but also represents the underlying cultural values and societal conventions of different locations. While politeness is widely regarded as vital for sustaining peaceful relationships, the methods in which it is exhibited and interpreted can differ greatly among cultures. The chapter opens with a review of the theoretical frameworks for understanding politeness techniques, drawing upon major works in sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. It then studies the unique norms and beliefs that impact politeness in both European and Asian cultures, noting major distinctions in methods. By studying politeness methods in various diverse cultural contexts, this chapter gives useful insights into the complicated interplay between language, culture, and communication, adding to the greater debate on (im)politeness and intercultural contact.
