Bridging the Knowledge-Expertise Gap for Outer Space and the Polar Regions, for All Humanity, and Beyond: A New Vision for Education
Abstract
Higher education faces a pivotal moment. While historical exploration often fueled inequality, the emerging frontiers of outer space and the Polar Regions demand a different approach. This chapter argues for the inclusion of dedicated studies in these regions within the curriculum. A diverse range of experts, from astrophysicists to climate scientists, will be essential for ensuring the sustainable development of these new frontiers. Currently, a significant knowledge gap exists regarding three regions. Most people lack awareness of the critical issues and exciting developments taking place. This chapter explores how the core values of education, alongside existing international law, present a unique opportunity. We can reimagine exploration and development to prioritize equality, environmental sustainability, and conflict reduction. By bridging the knowledge gap, higher education can equip all of humanity to navigate the future of our expanding world responsibly.
