Bridging the Digital Gap: Strategies for Enhancing Indigenous Digital Inclusion
Abstract
The digital divide hinders Indigenous empowerment by restricting access to services and economic opportunities, thereby affecting cultural preservation. This chapter emphasises culturally appropriate and sustainable strategies. It examines historical and contemporary factors, such as infrastructure limitations and systemic inequalities, using frameworks such as the diffusion of innovations and digital citizenship to promote Indigenous self-determination in the digital age. Lessons from national and international initiatives advocate increased infrastructure investment and tailored digital literacy programs. Sustainable initiatives have been proposed to empower Indigenous communities to control their digital futures, highlighting the importance of partnerships among Indigenous organisations, governments, and technology companies for long-term support and capacity building. This approach aimed to bridge the digital gap and create an inclusive digital world for Indigenous communities.
