Black Women Activist-Intellectuals in Higher Education: Challenging Systems and Creating Change
Abstract
Through Joy James's framework of love and rage, this chapter examines how Black women in academia transform institutional challenges into catalysts for systemic change. It analyzes how Black women activist-intellectuals leverage multiple forms of power to transform higher education institutions. Through careful examination of figures from Anna Julia Cooper to Bettina Love, this study shows how Black women scholars combine deep institutional engagement with strategic resistance to advance collective liberation. By examining how Black women navigate intersectional discrimination while creating transformative educational spaces, this study reveals how love and rage function as essential components of institutional change. This work demonstrates how Black women's activist-intellectual work continues to generate new possibilities for collective liberation within and beyond academia.
