Beyond Bin Basics: Confronting Waste in Tourism and Hospitality
Abstract
The tourism and hospitality sectors face significant challenges in managing waste, which poses environmental, economic, and social risks. This chapter explores waste management challenges within these sectors, examining the current state of waste management, environmental impacts of poor waste management, economic and social implications, innovative solutions and best practices, case studies of successful initiatives, and future outlooks. Key findings highlight the urgency for sustainable waste management practices, emphasising the need for collaboration between businesses, governments, communities, and consumers. The chapter concludes with a call to action for integrating sustainability into operations, investing in infrastructure and technology, and advocating for supportive policies. Future outlooks focus on embracing innovation, increasing awareness, and fostering collaboration to build a more sustainable future for the tourism and hospitality sectors.
