Balancing AI-Driven Innovation With Authentic Learning in Higher Education
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping higher education by enhancing instructional design, assessments, and student engagement. While AI offers benefits like adaptive learning, predictive analytics, and smart feedback, it also challenges the preservation of authentic learning, which values real-world relevance, critical thinking, collaboration, and student agency. This chapter examines how educators and institutions can balance AI innovation with maintaining authentic pedagogy by proposing a framework that integrates AI tools while supporting core authentic learning principles. It draws on educational theory, case studies, and practical examples to show how AI can enhance teaching without undermining learning quality. Additionally, it addresses challenges such as faculty readiness, ethical issues, and policy gaps, offering recommendations for professional development, curriculum updates, and policy to ensure responsible AI use. The aim is to help educators and administrators foster environments where AI-driven innovation and authentic learning coexist effectively.
