Artificial Intelligence as Faculty Development and Learning Innovation
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been taking over the higher education sector and is likewise playing a role that defines the professional growth of faculty members. This chapter discusses how campus-wide AI based solutions can be used to enable faculty to grow through improved training, advanced learning analytics and to offer personalized professional learning at scale. A conceptual model is proposed to identify the 3 key pillars of AI in faculty development, including (i) AI in training and skill enhancement delivered via intelligent platforms, virtual simulations, etc; (ii) AI-based learning analytics to obtain actionable insights out of classroom interactions, with assessments, and predictive performance tools; and (iii) personalized professional learning driven by adaptive modules, AI tutors, and career pathway guidance. In addition, an AI benefits map is presented to show how these applications can be used to serve faculty responsibilities in the context of teaching, research, administration and mentoring.
