AI Enhanced School Guidance Interventions: Promises, Threats, and Future Directions
Abstract
School guidance offices traditionally offer face-to-face support for students' academic, personal, social, and career development. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted these services, necessitating a shift to remote modalities like video counseling and digital apps. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) presents both opportunities and challenges for guidance services. AI-powered chatbots can offer conversational support, mental wellness activities, career guidance, and even preliminary mental health screenings. While AI provides anonymity and accessibility, its increasing sophistication raises questions about its role alongside traditional human counselors and the potential impact on the human element of guidance.
