A Systematic Review of the Role of AI-Enabled Chatbots in Modern Education: Benefits, Risks, and Implementation Complexity
Abstract
The growing adoption of AI-enabled chatbots in education stems from advances in artificial intelligence, offering both opportunities and challenges. This chapter reviews 41 high-impact studies published between 2017 and 2023, examining how chatbots are used in schools, as well as their impact, benefits, and associated challenges. Chatbots have shown potential to enhance personalized learning, improve student engagement, and support administrative tasks, though these benefits vary across subjects and strategies. Despite their promise, chatbots face challenges such as technical issues, ethical risks, and inconsistent effectiveness across educational contexts. The review underscores the need for further research, particularly longitudinal studies and evaluation frameworks, to better understand chatbot integration. This chapter contributes to the discussion on AI in education, highlighting both the advantages and the complexities of its implementation, with a focus on skill obsolescence, misuse, and bias in educational practices.
