A Practical Guideline for Addressing Data Trustworthiness in Qualitative Research
Abstract
Qualitative research explores people's feelings, perceptions, and meaning-making processes. Therefore, researchers will document real experiences, resulting in a comprehensive understanding of occurrences. Thus, it is crucial to ensure the trustworthiness of the qualitative results, which convinces readers that the research is worthy of attention. However, qualitative research is subjective, making a feeling of trustworthiness more challenging to achieve than quantitative research. Accordingly, this chapter offers multiple strategies that consider the practical requirements and theoretical underpinnings required to ensure the trustworthiness of qualitative research. To do this, four criteria commonly employed for evaluating the caliber of qualitative research were utilized, and concerns regarding each criterion that must be addressed were identified. The chapter offers insight to help methodology instructors, doctoral supervisors, and qualitative researchers refresh prior knowledge, catch up on what they may have missed, and adapt it directly to their research settings.
