Abstract

Uttarakhand state in the IHR has diverse geographical settings and natural attractions. The tourism-driven state faces significant waste management challenges amplified by the steady increase of tourist activities. This study investigates the varied waste management approaches in Uttarakhand's tourist locales, highlighting distinct operational challenges and infrastructural capacities. This paper categorizes these areas based on their specific waste management responses, aiming to tailor these classifications to government policies to optimize waste management efficiency. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach that integrates qualitative stakeholder interviews with quantitative waste management data, the research provides an in-depth evaluation of existing disposal systems and their policy alignment. The results underscore urgent need for policy adaptations that cater to the distinct needs, advocating for community-focused initiatives. This study contributes to the discourse on sustainable tourism by offeringinsights that can guide similar regions in optimizing waste management practice.
