Description

The last decade has seen a tremendous increase in the volume of data collected from personal and professional sources. While there have been many computational approaches available for analyzing these datasets, there is also growing interest in visualizing and making sense of spatio-temporal data.

Geo-Intelligence and Visualization through Big Data Trends provides an overview of recent developments, applications, and research on the topic of spatio-temporal big data analysis and visualization, as well as location intelligence and analytics. Focusing on emerging trends in this dynamic field, this publication is an innovative resource aimed at the scholarly and professional interests of academicians, practitioners, and students.

Reviews and Testimonials

Computer and information scientists connect spatio-temporal big business data with people, places and things and associate the big data trends with the emerging field of computational social science. Among the topics are campaign optimization through mobility network analysis, assessing the financial well-being of merchants by analyzing behavioral patterns in historical transactions, an interactive tool for visualizing and analyzing spatio-temporal data, developing a method for visualizing population movements, and demystifying big data in the cloud: enhancing privacy and security using data mining techniques.

Author's/Editor's Biography

Burçin Bozkaya (Ed.)
Burcin Bozkaya is an Associate Professor of Operations Management and the Associate Dean at Sabanci School of Management. Burcin earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Industrial Engineering at Bilkent University and his Ph.D. in Management Science at the School of Business of the University of Alberta. Prior to joining Sabanci University in 2004, Burcin worked as a Senior Operations Research Analyst at Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), Inc., in Redlands, California. During this industry work experience, Burcin participated in and led many software development projects specializing in the applications of GIS and Operations Research in transportation and logistics optimization. In one such project, he received INFORMS Franz Edelman Finalist Award, for a project completed for Schindler Elevator Corporation. Since 2004, Burcin teaches courses on Operations Management, Geographic Information Systems, Customer Relationship Management with Location Intelligence, Quantitative Decision Making and Excel/VBA Programming. He conducts research on Spatial Analytics, Location Analysis, Transportation Network Planning and Vehicle Routing Optimization, and Combinational Optimization using Heuristic Algorithms, and has published in various international journals. He is a recipient of IEEE 2008 Best Paper Award, and the 2010 Canadian Operational Research Society’s Best Practice Prize. Burcin is a father of two and enjoys playing his guitar and flute, and traveling in his (not-so-easy-to-find) free time.

Vivek Singh (Ed.)
Vivek Singh is an Assistant Professor at the School of Communication and Information, Rutgers University and a Visiting Assistant Professor at the MIT Media Lab. Vivek obtained his PhD in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine and spent two years conducting post-doctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He obtained his bachelors and masters degrees in Computer Science from the National University of Singapore and was a full-time Lecturer at the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore for 4 years. His work has been presented at multiple leading venues and received two best paper awards. He was selected as one of the ‘Emerging Leaders in Multimedia Research’ by IBM Research Labs in 2009 and he won the ‘Big Data for Social Good’ datathon organized by Telefónica, the Open Data Institute and the MIT in 2013. His research interests lie at the intersection of Big Data, Computational Social Science, and Multimedia Information Systems.
