Wasswa Shafik

Wasswa Shafik is a remarkable computer scientist, information technologist, and educator, hails from the vibrant capital city of Uganda, Kampala. His passion extends beyond technology, encompassing people’s health, justice, and the responsible use of technological advancements, regardless of race, religion, or sex. With a strong educational background, he holds a bachelor's degree in information technology engineering with a minor in mathematics from Ndejje University, Uganda. He further pursued a master of engineering degree in information technology engineering (MIT) with a computer and communication network option from Yazd University, Iran, and a PhD in Computer Science at Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Brunei Darussalam. As a member of the IEEE, Shafik has made significant contributions in various domains such as smart agriculture, health informatics, computer vision, network science, and security and privacy. His passion for sustainable solutions and his deep understanding of the health and environmental challenges we face today have propelled him to the forefront of sustainable measures. Shafik’s interest extends to Smart Cities, where he investigates the intersection of Big Data, IoT, and Artificial Intelligence. His work delves into energy management, privacy, and performance evaluation in the context of Internet of Things (IoT) applications within smart urban environments. Additionally, Shafik explores fog computing architectures, privacy, and security solutions. His work also encompasses the evaluation and analysis of fog-mobile edge performance in IoT scenarios. Wasswa’s expertise extends to artificial intelligence and its application in cybersecurity and cyberdefense. He reviews the theoretical understanding of deep learning in the context of analysis of UAV biomedical engineering technologies. He has published more than 80 research articles, book sections, and conferences in many reputed journals, including Scopus Q1, Q2, and SCI in different publishers. He served as departmental support for Mathematics for Data Science, Advanced Topics in Computing, and Advanced Algorithms at the School of Digital Science, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. He served in different capacities, including a community data officer at Pace-Uganda, research associate at TechnoServe, research assistant at PSI-Uganda, research lead at Socio-economic Data Center (SEDC-Uganda), research lab head at the Dig Connectivity Research Laboratory (DCRLab), Kampala, Uganda, and ag. managing director at Asmaah Charity Organisation. Shafik’s journey is one of curiosity, innovation, and a deep-rooted desire to positively impact the world through technology, education, and sustainability.
