Venugopal N. Puluamaghatta

Venugopal N. Puluamaghatta has completed his masters in Biological Anthropology and Ph. D in Molecular Anthropology from University of Mysore, Mysore. At present, he is working as an Assistant Anthropologist, Anthropological Survey of India, Eastern Regional Centre, Kolkata. Under the national project “DNA Polymorphism and Disease” he explored the genetic causes of the Handigodu disease. The major contribution of the said study was identification of a novel 39 base pair deletion; this novel deletion is not reported elsewhere in any of the literature cited in any of the genome and mutation database. The results of his study provide an opportunity for prenatal and post natal screening to avoid the ill effects of the Handigodu syndrome and there by promoting healthy society for the future generations. For the same he has received prestigious “Young Scientist Award” from Indian Society of Human Genetics at 38th Annual Conference and International Symposium Developmental and Complex Disorders in 2012. Also, he is closely associated with National project “DNA Polymorphism in Contemporary Indian Population”, which involves sequencing of mtDNA and Y chromosome to explore maternal and paternal inheritance and to know evolutionary changes in genetic structure of Indian population. Under this project for the research work “Peopling of Uttarakhand” he received Young Scientist Award from Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Uttarakhand at 10thUttarakhand State Science and Technology Congress in 2016. Further, published more than 40 research papers in National and International Journals and serving as editorial member in three journals.
