Semra Kotan
Assoc. Prof. Dr.
Semra Kotan
is a faculty member at the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema of the Faculty of Communication at Atatürk University. She completed her BA (2011), MA (2015) and PhD (2020) degrees at Atatürk University in the field of Radio, Television and Cinema. In her PhD, she focused on the dynamic ties between cinema and social structure by examining the relationship between the individual and ideology in the context of horror cinema. Her academic interests include cinema theories, semiotics, representation theories, cultural studies and ideology criticism; in this context, she conducts theoretical and analytical studies on Turkish cinema, popular culture products and digital media content. Her studies, which focus especially on film genres, national cinema narratives, visual culture and media representations in the digital age, contribute to communication research by adopting an interdisciplinary approach. Kotan, who has numerous national and international articles, book chapters and papers published within the scope of her research, has taken part in various scientific research projects as a director or researcher. She also serves as a thesis advisor at the MA level and teaches courses requiring expertise in the fields of cinema and media studies. Kotan, who has served as program coordinator, Erasmus institutional coordinator, department vice president and various commission members within the scope of his academic-administrative duties, continues his academic studies in the fields of social sciences and humanities and actively participates in national/international scientific activities.
