Patrick Girouard

Patrick Girouard has a long academic journey, which started at the University of Ottawa, where he received two Bachelors of Sciences in Biology (1987) and in Biotechnology (1988). Following these years in Canada’s National Capital, he embarked on a new educational adventure in Dental Medicine at Universtité de Montréal. He did so under the Canadian Forces (CF) Dental Officer Training Program (DOTP). Upon graduation in 1993, Dr. Girouard was stationed at 14 Wings Greenwood, Nova Scotia, until he was transferred to the operational posting as the Detachment Commander, onboard the HMCS Provider in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After completing his service obligation with the Canadian Forces in 1997, Dr. Girouard moved to Cap Pelé, New Brunswick, where he established the Cap Pelé Dental Health Centre. He continued his Academic Studies in 2006, obtaining a Certificate from the University of New Jersey in Orofacial Pain. During these years his integration of digital technologies began, namely with CEREC (Sirona, Germany), BioPAK (BioResearch, USA), T-Scan (Tekscan, USA) and Matscan (Tekscan, USA). In 2009, Dr. Girouard undertook a Master’s Degree of Sciences program at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine’s Craniofacial Pain Center, in Boston, which he successfully completed in 2011. It was at Tufts that he began his work on the IMSsportsguard. His Master’s Thesis “Comparative Study of Postural Sway Stability with Two Different Mouthguards in Athletes” was published in 2011, and provided very strong proof of the postural stabilization of the IMSsportsguard compared to conventional mouthguards. He was granted an adjunct Faculty position at Tufts University until 2014. His interest in the IMSsportsguard continued and he joined the Kinesiology Department at Acadia University, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where he currently holds an adjunct Faculty position, and actively pursues research. In 2015, Dr. Girouard moved his dental practice to Dieppe, New Brunswick, where he established the new, State of the Art, Dental Health Centre, where he continues to provide care for his patients. In 2017, the research team form Acadia University published a ground breaking paper, “Physiological Response of a Jaw-Repositioning Custom-Made Mouthguard on Airway, and Their Effects of Athletic Performance”, providing further insight on the athletic benefits of the IMS sportsguard. Dr. Girouard’s work at Acadia University continues, while other research and manuscripts with new findings and data are presently being undertaken. Dr. Girouard is actively involved in other projects with multinational companies, such as BioResearch, Tekscan, Sirona, and Roland, where he is a Key Opinion Leader, and acts as a product evaluator and innovator. As Guest Editor, he recently published in Journal of Craniomandibular and Sleep Practice, “Occlusion… a word of divide among the profession; but a new digital paradigm could be unifying!”. His passion for the profession persists, as he continues to write and contributes to the literature and knowledge of Dental Medicine. Dr. Girouard has lectured (and continues to lecture) internationally, on Sports Dentistry, Dental Occlusion, Temporomandibular Disorders, Biometrics, and Posturo-Occlusal relationships.
