Patricia Martínez-Álvarez
Patricia Martínez-Álvarez
is an associate professor in the program in Bilingual/Bicultural Education in the department of Arts and Humanities at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research interests lie at the intersection of bilingualism/biculturalism and disability, which she examines employing cultural historical activity theory (CHAT) and disability studies in education (DSE) perspectives. Dr. Martínez-Álvarez aims at advancing bilingual education toward more inclusive, imaginative, and hybrid possibilities for minoritized learners. To do this, she centers on equity in education around three main themes: (1) Expanding what counts in schools as language, literacy, and content knowledge and practices to include those of bilingual communities; (2) The need for a concerted effort between bilinguals with dis/abilities and the learning context; (3) Teacher preparation for inclusive bilingual education. Dr. Martínez-Álvarez is co-editor in chief of Exceptional Children and associate editor of Teachers College Record. Her publications appear in venues such as Bilingual Research Journal, Curriculum Inquiry, Equity & Excellence in Education, Journal of Teacher Education, Race Ethnicity and Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, Teachers College Record, and Urban Education.
