Marian A. Evans

Marian Evans , born and raised in Bridgeport, CT where she graduated from Lauralton Hall (Academy of Our Lady of Mercy), received a Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College, a Master in Public Health from Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), and earned her Doctor of Medicine from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. She completed two residencies in Obstetrics/ Gynecology and Anesthesiology, and is currently a tenured Associate Professor at Southern Connecticut State University where she teaches undergraduate and graduate public health courses, and serves as the graduate coordinator of three MPH programs, Multicultural Center faculty liaison, and Grow, Resilience, Opportunity, and Wisdom (GROW) mentor. Her research interests are varied but include women’s health, women of color in academia, reproductive health, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She served as a Physician Scientist at the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, until she was appointed the Director of Health and Social Services for the largest city in Connecticut, Bridgeport. She is a Connecticut Health Foundation Health Leadership Fellow and a Community Leadership Program fellow of the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund. In 2007, she was one of the People to People’s 20 national delegates to travel to India as an ambassador for public health. In 2009, she traveled to Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Soweto, South Africa, and in 2013 to Guatemala on international field studies in public health. In 2017, she traveled to Cuba on a People-to-People Educational Exchange with the Academy of Women’s Health exploring the maternal-child public health infrastructure. This year, she traveled back to Cuba with the Association of Schools and Program of Public Health. In 2019, she organized her first faculty study abroad service, arts, and culture trip to Bermuda with SCSU University Access Programs students. She has just completed her second study abroad trip 2023 with students to Puerto Rico. She has received numerous awards: 2022-Outstanding Educator Award (Phi Delta Kappa, Delta Phi Chapter), 2019-Social Justice Owl Award (SCSU), 2018-Healthcare Award (New Haven Club National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women (NANBPWC), and Outstanding Faculty Member (SCSU MCC), 2015-Outstanding Master of Public Health Student (SCSU), 2014-Eta Sigma Gamma Honor Society(SCSU), 2013-Golden Key International Honour Society, 2011-2018-J. Philip Outstanding Teaching Award nominations, 2010-“Behind the Scenes” COTHS Board of Trustees, 2009-“Women You Should Know” Bridgeport Black Pride; 2008-Woman of Distinction Housatonic Girl Scouts, and Fairfield County Environmental Justice Award, 2007-Power to End Stroke Award and Fred Harris Turning Point Award American Heart Association, and 2005-Sojourner Truth Award Greater Bridgeport NANBPW. Presently she sits as a board member of the Community Health Network of CT Foundation, and a board member of the Greater New Haven Green Fund. She is an American Heart Association Instructor for CPR, FirstAid, and Pediatric CPR, as well as an instructor for STOP the Bleed. She is an entrepreneur and founder of HealthONE Enterprises. She is passionate about ministry to people in untraditional, and unconventional forms.
