Joyce Gosata Maphanyane
Biography
A: Professional
Joyce is an infrastructural engineer with:
1. BSc (Joint Honours), Topographic Science (Land Survey, Cartography, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) and Geology; theses:
a) “Map Revision for Botswana and how it can be adapted and
b) Geological Mapping of Brunflo, Jamtland, Central Sweden.
With the University of Wales, University College of Swansea, Wales, UK;
2. MSc GIS - Geographical Information Systems, Information Technology and Remote Sensing.
Thesis is on the Application of GIS/LIS to Rural Land Capability Classification.
With the Institute of Engineering, Surveying and Space Geodesy; University of Nottingham, Nottingham, UK;
3. Diplôme d’études Supérieures Spécialisé (DESS), Thesis titled the “Botswana Natural Resource Database, Design, Creation and Inventory, Towards Optimized Environmental Monitoring.” For the Cycle d’enseignement de la Télédétection with the Université de Pierre et Marie Curie, (Paris VI), Paris, France; and
4. The PhD Engineering: Infrastructural Engineering on GIS & Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Thesis on the Investigation of Land Cover Change and Trends through the Reconstruction of Historical Landscapes with School of Engineering, Melbourne University, Parkville, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
B. Work Experience
Joyce worked as a civil servant in applications for cartography, database management, photogrammetry remote sensing and GIS.
Now she is an academician at the University of Botswana, doing research and teaching both undergraduate and post graduate in the same cadre.
C. Projects
She has been involved with a number of national, regional and international projects like AfSIS –CIAT Africa Soil Mapping, SASSCAL, Regional Postgraduate Course on GIS and Remote Sensing Creation and GHG land cover and land cover change mapping for UNFCCC for forest resource management, inventory and monitoring for climate change.
D. Hobbies
Her hobbies are agriculture, photography, cooking exotic food and travelling the world.
