Joanine Hester Nel
Joanine Hester Nel
received her PhD in General Linguistics from Stellenbosch University in March 2015 and was hired as a linguist in the Afrikaans Department at the University of Pretoria in 2017, where she is currently a senior lecturer and researcher in Afrikaans and Applied Linguistics on the main and educational campuses of the University. Her research interests include a focus on first and second language acquisition, code-switching, as well as morphology and syntax in socio- and psycholinguistics. She has a keen interest in language, how language use affects people's lives specifically in academic literacy and how children learn and use language. She has published numerous articles and presented at various conferences, contributing to the understanding of language use in multilingual societies. Her work on the acquisition of passives has recently won the award for Best Article on Language Diversity in the journal Language Acquisition for 2024.
