Iain Aberdeen
Iain Aberdeen
is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Coaching and Physical Education at the University of Sunderland, with over twenty years of experience coaching across multiple sports at grassroots, national, and international levels. He has guided athletes from beginner to World, European, and Commonwealth medallists in fencing, shooting, and modern pentathlon, and has also coached athletes internationally in wheelchair fencing and para laser run. Iain’s coaching philosophy centres on developing athlete autonomy and self-awareness, psychological skills, and evidence-based practice, drawing from his strong interest in coaching pedagogy, coaching psychology, and talent development. He is currently undertaking research focused on psychological skills training in coach education, aiming to better prepare coaches for the psychological demands of developing high-performing athletes. Iain is dedicated to fostering both performance excellence and athlete growth in inclusive, supportive environments, with a particular commitment to accessible and adaptive sport.
