Harmohinder S. Athwal
, a distinguished Board Certified Psychiatrist based in Fremont, California, currently serves as the Corporate Administrator at Sunol Hills, LLC. Since June 2019, he has overseen administrative operations, including HR, infrastructure, and overall management for a clinical entity dedicated to treating adolescents and adults with primary psychiatric or eating disorders in a residential setting. Additionally, Dr. Athwal is the Director of Adolescent Services at San Jose Behavioral Hospital, a position he has held since March 2024. His extensive experience at Fremont Hospital, where he served as the Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program Director from October 2017 to August 2023, further solidifies his expertise. At Fremont, he provided comprehensive care for youths aged 12-17 in a subacute setting, managing medication and various therapeutic interventions, while ensuring regulatory compliance and staff supervision. Dr. Athwal’s career is marked by significant contributions as the Adolescent Medical Director at Fremont Hospital from July 2005 to October 2017. He expertly managed programming for a 52-bed unit, addressing severe psychiatric conditions such as depression, suicidality, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance abuse. His private practice from August 2006 to January 2021 showcased his dedication to providing psychiatric care and consultation to children, teens, and adults with diverse diagnoses. As the Medical Director at Anka Behavioral Health since August 2006, Dr. Athwal has been pivotal in providing care, consultation, and supervision in a community care setting, specifically for crisis residential services for youth. Dr. Athwal’s academic journey includes a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship and an Adult Psychiatry Residency at Stanford University Medical Center, following his initial training at Cleveland Clinic Foundation. His scholarly contributions include notable publications, and he has received prestigious awards such as Intern of the Year at Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a nomination for Outstanding Resident of the Year by Stanford. An active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and the Northern California Psychiatric Society, Dr. Athwal holds a medical degree from Guru Nanak Dev University Medical College and a BS in Biology from Khalsa College, both in Amritsar, Punjab, India.
