Donna E. Alvermann

Donna E. Alvermann is Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus and the Omer Clyde & Elizabeth Parr Aderhold Professor in Education at the University of Georgia. Formerly a social studies and reading teacher for 12 years in Texas and New York, she is also an elected member of the Reading Hall of Fame and past president of the Literacy Research Association. Her research focuses on critical media literacy in in-school and out-of-school settings. Alvermann has published more than 195 articles, chapters, and books. Her most recent volume (with Dennis Sumara), Ideas that Changed Literacy Practices: First-Person Accounts by Leading Voices, won the Society for Professors of Education Outstanding Book Award for 2022. Alvermann directed the National Reading Research Center from 1992-97 at the University of Georgia in collaboration with John Guthrie at the University of Maryland. Her major research awards include the Literacy Research Association’s Oscar S. Causey Award, the International Literacy Association’s William S. Gray Citation of Merit, and the Divergent Award for Digital Literacies Research.
