Deborah Austin
Deborah A. Austin
, whose professional goals included having one foot in the community and the other in the academy, was part of the federal Central Hillsborough Healthy Start Project and REACHUP, Inc. for 24 years. REACHUP, Inc, is a community non-profit whose focus is advocating for and mobilizing resources to help communities achieve equality in healthcare and positive health for families. She is one of three co-founders of the maternal and child health non-profit and recently retired as Director of Community Engagement. As Director of Community Engagement, Dr. Austin provided oversight to the community outreach, faith initiative, male involvement, and advertising and marketing components of the organization; supervised graduate student interns from various universities across Florida and the southeastern United States; and conducted workshops and trainings on implicit/unconscious bias and appreciative inquiry. With expertise in qualitative methods and community-engaged research, she served as principal liaison between REACHUP, Inc. and its partners conducting research which required community engagement and mobilization.
