David Upegui
David Upegui
is a dedicated science educator and Latino immigrant who overcame poverty through education. For over 14 years, he has taught at Central Falls High School, his alma mater, where he currently instructs AP Biology, Human Anatomy, and Medical Interventions. His inclusive approach encourages students to become problem-solvers and critical thinkers. David has fostered strong community connections by coordinating classroom visits from university professors and initiating the school’s Science Olympiad team, which has won several medals. For his work, he received the Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. A mentor to teachers and teacher candidates, David has contributed to publications on science education, including co-authoring the textbook ““Integrating Racial Justice Into Your High-School Biology Classroom: Using Evolution to Understand Diversity.” He holds a B.A. in biology and psychology, an M.A. in psychobiology, and a Ph.D. in education.
