Christopher D. Johnson
Christopher D. Johnson
is a nationally recognized Black Deaf educator, strategist, and advocate for disability justice and inclusive education. In his newest role as a K–8 American Sign Language (ASL) educator in the Philadelphia School District, he is developing and teaching a bilingual, multicultural curriculum infused with junior cooperative education—creating pathways for early language access, identity development, and career readiness. He formerly served as the University of Cincinnati’s first Black Deaf Assistant Dean in its 200-year history and was previously the first Black Deaf professor at the University of Minnesota–Duluth. Across both institutions, he advanced inclusive excellence, reformed access policy, and elevated institutional accountability. As Founder and CEO of Creative Minds, Johnson leads programs that champion culturally affirming education, interpreter equity, and systemic reform. He also chairs the Dr. Glenn B. Anderson Scholarship Program under the National Black Deaf Advocates and co-leads the 2024 Black Deaf Men’s Summit. His contributions have been recognized by the National Conference on Race & Ethnicity, Hamilton Relay, and the National Disability Mentoring Coalition. Through his scholarship, teaching, and service, he continues to transform educational ecosystems to center Black Deaf and disabled communities with dignity and purpose.
