Christi Batamula
Dr.
Christi Batamula
is an associate professor in the Department of Education at Gallaudet University. She has over 20 years of experience in Deaf education and early childhood education at the 0-12 level and at the university level. Her research interests include 1) supporting diverse families with young DHH children through family language planning and policy, 2) applying Reggio Emilia inspiration in Deaf Education, and 3) supporting immigrant families with young DHH children as they engage in their child’s education. Dr. Batamula is a white, hard of hearing, female. Her family is quite diverse racially and linguistically with ASL, English, Swahili, and Spanish all being primary languages in the home. Dr. Batamula is passionate about learning from marginalized persons and using research and practice to dismantle oppressive systems, thereby creating space and opportunities for reform and truly inclusive practice. Dr. Batamula is a proud part of the Deaf community with strong ties to and alliance with the immigrant community. Her research is mainly qualitative as she believes strongly in the power of listening and making space for people to share their stories.
