Candace J. Gibson is an associate professor in the Department of Pathology in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario (London, ON, Canada). She received her PhD under the supervision of Dr. Richard Wurtman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA). She joined the Department of Pathology at UWO in 1982 and has been involved in medical research, teaching undergraduate baccalaureate, medical, nursing, and dental students, and administration in the department’s graduate and undergraduate degree programs. Over the past decade she has been actively engaged in the introduction of teaching in health informatics as a medical school elective and in the health information management specialization in the Faculty of Health Sciences. In the latter program, she teaches courses in pathology, health informatics, and health information management. She is a certified health information management professional (CHIM).Her current interests include the development of effective e-learning tools, HI and HIM curriculum development, and the introduction and adoption of electronic records in medical practice and health care. Research projects involve looking at the use of the electronic record as the focus for interprofessional collaboration and education of medical students, nursing students, and other health professionals. Within that collaborative care team, she also has an interest in promoting the role of the patient/client in taking responsibility for their health and well-being through the use of a personal health record. The use of electronic records also introduces challenges in health information management, particularly with regard to security, privacy, and confidentiality of personal health data.
