Abstract

This paper contributes to IT education by discussing the rationale, description and educational outcomes of a new course developed as part of a masters program in information systems. The course uses Critical Theory as a lens to examine current information systems theories and practices. The course engages students in critical discourse about the foundations of information systems and the roles that information technology plays in the lives of people as individuals and as members of complex social institutions. Emancipatory approaches to improving organizations’ uses of information technology systems are emphasised. Ethical considerations related to offering the course are identified.
