Testimonials and ReviewsToday, huge amounts of diverse data are generated in multiple research domains throughout the whole extent of biomedicine (-omics, biosignals, biomedical images), from the bedside to experimental laboratories, adding new factors that should be considered in medical decision making. Although medical professionals can now have access to more information on their patients’ conditions, such data also complicate their work, setting new challenges regarding their efficient processing, interpretation and integration through innovative computational approaches. Sophisticated computer modeling tools are essential to compare observations of an individual patient and relate them to a vast dataset of observations of others with similar symptoms and known conditions. Integrated and individualized biomedical data sources along with advanced information and communication tools will need to make a significant contribution to translational research, namely the movement of discoveries from the bench to bedside, toward the ultimate goal of personalized medicine. Such tools will not only contribute in delivering effective therapies, tailored to the exact biological state of an individual, but could also be used in preventive medicine, to predict occurrence or evolution of specific diseases in people at risk. The International Journal of Systems Biology and Biomedical Technology provides a unique venue for the publication of groundbreaking work in these emerging topics that hold the promise toward personalized healthcare solutions. - Nantia Nikita, National Technical University of Athens, Greece
