Thailand: China's Role in a Shared Development Journey
Abstract
This case study examines the evolving China–Thailand partnership and its role in Thailand's development. It shows how economic, financial, technological, cultural, and environmental cooperation—framed by BRI, RCEP, ACFTA and LMC—has deepened trade, investment, and connectivity, with China as Thailand's top trading partner and a major FDI source in EVs, electronics, and infrastructure. It also highlights financial linkages, energy and climate projects, tourism, education, and media cooperation as tools of influence. At the same time, it analyzes key challenges, including Thailand's widening trade deficit, security and fraud risks affecting tourism, and localized environmental impacts, arguing that the long-term success of the partnership depends on balancing growth with social, security, and ecological governance.
